The US Open Snowboarding Championships at Stratton Mountain, Vt., promise big air, a "flying tomato" and a lot of medieval garb.
The 26th annual competition, which starts today, bills itself as “The Most Righteous Snowboarding Battle of the Ages.” It includes under-the-tent jousting demonstrations and features halfpipe, slopestyle and big air events.
All eyes will be on Carlsbad's Shaun White, the red-haired Olympic gold medalist and “Flying Tomato” who won his second straight U.S. Open halfpipe last year.
But the event is not limited to the big names. Anyone can enter, and contestants are chosen by lottery.
Last year, the theme was 1980s retro. This year, in keeping with the medieval theme, event-goers are being encouraged to dress as serfs, maidens, knights, wizards and dragons. Five jousting events are scheduled daily in its sponsor tent.
