The United States first ski lift, a rope tow was installed in Woodstock, Vermont in 1934. The site of the tow is on Woodstock’s Gilbert Hill, just north of the village on Route 12.
Vermont is on the eastern side of the United States and today has 19 Alpine Resorts. The terrain parks vary in size and features yet more super pipes, parks, half pipes and rails are popping up every year.
The largest ski and snowboard area in the east is Killington with the East’s highest capacity lift system. There are six interconnected mountains and with nearby Pico Mountain they offer unparalleled diversity with the greatest vertical in New England.
Other popular resorts include Smugglers’ Notch, Sugarbush, Stowe Mountain, Stratton Mountain and Jay Peak. You will also find Pico Mountain, Mount Snow, Bromley Mountain, Ascutney Mountain, Okemo Mountain, Burke Mountain, Suicide Six, Middlebury College Snow Bowl (rich in tradition), Bolton Valley and Magic Mountain resorts.
Mad River Glen in Vermont is the last hold-out in the East to continue to ban snowboards.
Cochran Ski Area is Vermont’s Ski Area for Kids. It is run as a non-profit enterprise and home to a junior race team.
