Bracing for what it calls a coming explosion in the popularity of snowboarding and skateboarding, Active Wallace Group has embarked on an ambitious expansion plan that will result in three times the current number of stores and a new headquarters in Mira Loma.
Active Wallace owns Active Ride Shop, which bills itself as the largest action-sports retailer in Southern California and the largest e-commerce and mail-order action-sports retailer. The company has signed a 10-year lease for 103,061 square feet at 12087 Landon Drive in Mira Loma.
Chief Executive John Wallace said the company expects to move into the headquarters, which will also be its distribution center, in January. Active Wallace's 100 employees are working out of 65,000 square feet spread out over three buildings in Ontario.

Ontario-based Active Wallace, which owns action-sports retailer Active Ride Shop, is moving to a larger headquarters in Mira Loma.
"We need to get everything underneath one roof, to make it much more cost-effective to run our business," Wallace said. "It'll also accommodate our growth plan for the next two years."
He said the company, which plans to open its 20th store next week, wants to add 40 stores over the next two to three years. Active Wallace also anticipates growing its online and mail-order business, based on the growing popularity of snowboarding and skateboarding, Wallace said.
"The sports-board market is a $13 billion industry," he said. "Within the blink of an eye, you'll see that grow to a $20 billion industry."
Wallace said that youths are gravitating away from team sports toward action sports. He said skateboarding in particular could gain a boost, as it could be added to the list of competitions for the 2012 Olympics in London.
The Mira Loma site was chosen because of its size and location, Wallace said. He hopes the proximity to Interstate 15 will raise the company's profile.
"The visibility from the freeway is almost priceless," he said. "People who drive by and see the building will take pride in it."
Wallace said the new building will have space for additional employees, but he's not yet sure how many the company will hire. He and his son Shane, now the company's president, started the company in 1989.
It now has stores from San Luis Obispo to the Mexican border. Inventory includes boards, helmets, apparel and backpacks.
Grubb & Ellis represented Active Wallace in the Mira Loma transaction. Lee & Associates represented the lessor, Vogel Properties Inc.
