Snowbird and Alta have been named the No. 1 Ski Resort in the United States by Skiing Magazine for four years running. They are located up the Little Cottonwood Canyon in the centre of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Snowbird is one mile down the Little Cottonwood Canyon from Alta. They share a lift link and a lift pass for skiers only. This combination has created the most challenging European-style ski circuit for advanced riders and skiers in the whole of North America. Snowbird has one of Americas few cable cars. Another term for these cable cars is aerial trams. Please note that Snowboarders are banned from Alta.
The field has an average annual snowfall of 500 inches of “dry” Utah powder. The base is at 7760 feet and the top elevation is at Hidden Peak at 11,000 feet, giving a vertical rise of 3240 feet. There are 2500 skiable acres with 27% suitable for beginners, 38% for intermediates and 35% suited for advanced riders and skiers. There are 89 runs with a 125-person tram and various quads and double chair lifts. In the summer of 2006 the Peruvian lift was replaced with a new high-speed quad and a 600 feet tunnel housing a conveyor life making intermediate terrain more accessible to skiers and riders.
At the Blue Bell Run there is a terrain park serviced by the Baby Thunder lift. A Superpipe is located on the Big Emma run accessed by the Mid Gad or Gadzoom lifts.
Snowbird is 29 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport and is a 45 minute scenic drive from the airport, making same day skiing and flying a reality.
